G. Tucker Childs (1948-2021) received his PhD in Linguistics in 1988. His dissertation was The phonology and morphology of Kisi. Tucker helped to run the African language program in its early days while he was a student. From Portland State University, where he was a professor of Applied Linguistics, he continued to provide support and encouragement to the UC Berkeley Center for African Studies and the African language program.
