Gordon Omenya
CAS Visiting Fellow, Fall 2026
Dr Omenya is currently at the University of California, Berkeley as a Visiting Scholar, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, and is working on the broader theme of Youth and Livelihoods in Africa, focusing mainly on youth and cannabis in Kenya.
Dr Gordon Omenya is a Lecturer in the Department of History, Archaeology, and Political Studies at Kenyatta University. He holds a PhD in History from the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France). His areas of interest include migration, race and diaspora studies, gender, youth, governance, popular culture, and heritage. Dr Omenya is a member of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the British Institute in East Africa, and the French Institute of Research in Africa (IFRA). He is also a reviewer for the Social Science Research Council (SSRC-New York), African Studies Review, and the British Academy. In 2022, Dr Omenya was an African Guest Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute, Uppsala, Sweden. He also served as a British Academy Newton International Fellow at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, from 2023 to 2025. Dr Omenya has published journal articles and book chapters. His recent publication is titled ‘Migration, Socio-Economic Relations and Oil Discovery in the Albertine Region of Bunyoro Kingdom: A Historical Reflection’, London: Palgrave. Dr Omenya is also a Getty Scholar, having undertaken his fellowship in residence at the Getty Research Institute-Getty Centre, in Los Angeles, California, United States of America.
