Welcome to the Center for African Studies

Berkeley's Center for African Studies was established in 1979 as an interdisciplinary research center to support basic research and training of scholars. In 2010, we celebrated our 10th year as an Organized Research Unit on the Berkeley campus. The Center supports scholarly activities over a broad range of topics that address contemporary African issues and works closely with several teaching units including African American Studies and the International and Area Studies Teaching Program. Through language study, fellowships, seminars, and curriculum development, the Center provides opportunities for students majoring in traditionally defined fields to develop a comprehensive interdisciplinary program in African Studies.
