Spring 2003 Responding to a Ford Foundation initiative to strengthen African Studies and assure the training and the diversity of the next generation of scholars and policy makers in the field, the Joint Berkeley-Stanford Center for African Studies is hosting two educator workshops z In 2003, the Joint
Stanford-Berkeley Center for African Studies continues its Diversity project
with two educator workshops: z Educators are also invited to attend our Joint Annual Spring Conference on Saturday, April 26, 2003 on the Stanford Campus. The theme this year is "Popular Culture in Africa." z We also encourage educators to take advantage of the Institute on Islam entitled, "Contemporary Islam in West Africa" (PDF flyer) of the West African Research Association (www.warc-croa.org), click on "Grants" and scroll to the bottom. WARA's Institute will take place in Dakar, Senegal from 15 to 29 June. To that end, the Joint Center will entertain requests for sponsorship to this Institute, other similar institutes or independent curriculum development in Africa if the travel can begin by June 30, 2003.
