UC Berkeley Graduate Division Administered Fellowship
FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES (FLAS) FELLOWSHIPS
Funded through the United States Department of Education, Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) support advanced training in African languages. To be eligible, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., a graduate student and plan to enroll in an African language course and African area studies course. Please check the Graduate Fellowship Deadlines website for FLAS deadlines as well as other UC Berkeley Fellowship deadlines. Please check with our Center for an update on eligible languages. Applications for the FLAS are available by clicking the following: Academic Year FLAS and Summer FLAS.
In the 2010-2011 academic year, the Center for African Studies will be proposing FLAS fellowships in Arabic, Chichewa, Swahili, Wolof and Zulu. Fellowships will be contingent on funding. Awards will not be made in other African languages or any European languages. The research and training of applicants, particularly for Arabic, should demonstrate a commitment to an African Studies perspective. Applicants seeking advanced language training and from professional schools are encouraged. Applicants for dissertation research abroad are giving the lowest priority. There will be a MANDATORY orientation for all Academic Year Fellows during the week of August 16, 2010. Please plan accordingly. Consult with Center for African Studies staff for additional information.
Summer FLAS fellowships: Beginning Swahili, by agreement of all the Title VI Centers, is NOT eligible for a summer FLAS sward. Refer to the web site on the Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI) at the University of Chicago Urbana-Champaign for a listing of eligible languages for Summer 2008 ( http://scali.afrst.uiuc.edu/). It is advisable to register your interest early in studying a particular language on the SCALI website. In-country language study requires U.S. Department of Education approval of the instructional program and travel itinerary. Summer FLAS for study abroad is not awarded to first-year language study that can be done in the U.S.
Other Fellowships
INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
Many graduate students studying Africa have also received dissertation and pre-dissertation fellowships from the Institute of International Studies at UC Berkeley.
UNDERGRADUATE FUNDING
UC Berkeley undergraduates have been successful in finding resources to pursue study and research in Africa. For more information, visit the Undergraduate Research Office.
FUNDING FOR AFRICAN NATIONALS
The International House at UC Berkeley has a new fellowship, The Daniel Mouen-Makoua Gateway Fellowship, for first-year doctoral students with financial need. Recipients will receive academic year room and board at International House to be matched with tuition and fees from a UC Berkeley department. In addition, the recipient will receive a $5,000 stipend from UC Berkeley's Graduate Division. Students from Sub-Saharan Africa will be given the highest priority. Students will be nominated by the admitting UC department for fellowship consideration. Final selection will be determined by faculty committee review. I-House has other fellowships as well.
In general, fellowships for students from African countries to study in the United States are limited. We have listed several websites which provide useful information in tracking down such funds.
POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
The Center does not offer postdoctoral fellowships. The University of California has several postdoctoral fellowships that might be of interest, including the Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Academic Diversity, the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, and the S.V. Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellowships in Natural Resource Studies. Some unit specific post-doctoral opportunities can also be found posted on the Academic Personnel Office's employment site.
